I LOVE PUERTO RICO!
I just got back from the first Puerto Rico Food & Wine Festival, which was absolutely amazing and an incredible success.
The Island is called La Isla Del Encanto (the enchanted island) and I could not agree more
I was part of the event together with Chef Cat Cora from Iron Chef, Michele Burnstein from “Michi’s” ,George Duran from “Ham on the street” and “The secret life of” and local Chefs Wilo Benet from “Pikayo” and “Paya” and Enrique Pineiro from Bokaito and Telemundo’s “Operacion Chef”.
The event was 4 days and had daily attendance between one thousand to three thousand people daily in the brand new spectacular convention center.
A big congratulation to the organizers for a great and classy event!!
Restaurants (Must go)
Pikayo
I had the most amazing almost aphrodisiac meal at the famous Wilo Benet restaurant called Pikayo which is inside of the Museum of Art of Puerto Rico. The setting is in a beautiful colonial building and the food is a true mix of local criollo done in high modern style. It is what I call Nuevo Caribbean Cuisine. Wilo is an artist and he is truly creative and innovative chef. Wilo also has “Paya” restaurant.
Ajili Mojili
Best authentic Puerto Rican Cuisine done delicious, the chef treated us to Seafood mofongo, Crab coconut rice, avocado salad with passion fruit vinaigrette.
Las Piedras
Criollo mountain food (very authentic farm food) done at its best. About 2 hours from San Juan.
Had Tamarind chicken and arroz con gandules (Pigeon Pea rice)that was great.
Fell in love with aranjitas made from plantain cut in match sticks. They are shredded true a box grater then fused in the center by hand and deep fried to crisp and golden perfection.
Dragon Fly
Tropical sushi at Dragon Fly was jummy and totally different and extremely creative, rolls included where rolled in plantain thin slices, such as the Criollo roll and mofongo rolls. Mofongo is a traditional plantain mash.
We also had pork y amarillo dumplings, asian marinated churasko with dragonfries.
Basiliko
From Chef Rivera was one restaurant I did not get to eat but had his tastings daily at the festival and was blown away by his inventive cuisine, it is a combination of a Feran Adria meets the The Pirates of the Caribbean. Loved the lime and coconut caviars and all I tasted including a liquid Cesar salad. I know it sounds really weird, but it was delicioso!
